Screening at Encounters Film Festival in South Africa Big Success!

The screening of Turn it Loose at the Encounters Film Festival in Cape Town on August 28 was a big success. It marked the end of a four city tour with Red Bull BC One All Stars Roxrite and Lilou to South Africa.

Tour organizer Zacharia Ramasia informed us, “The movie was received with great appreciation; even by those who didn’t have any idea about B-Boying before. The Q & A session was a mind opener for those not regularly exposed to the art of B-Boying. You could tell people fell in love with B-Boying right there and then, due to the way it was depicted in the movie. Having protagonists of the movie available for questioning was a treat to behold. The audience could not get enough of them. And of course there was that one question being posed to Lilou again, ‘Where is the belt?’”

Lilou and Roxrite, protagonists of the film, connected with the South African youths during the tour. They gave workshops in four cities, judged the Solo Pro B-Boy Battle in Johannesburg, South Africa’s most important B-Boy competition, and were available for questions and sit-downs with the B-Girls and B-Boys who had come to meet them. The kids were very appreciative having a chance to work with two of the most famous B-Boys of the planet. In return, the All Stars were impressed by the eagerness of the youngsters to learn.

Lilou stated, “Its crazy how flexible the South African kids are! With more influence by B-Boys from the international scene and some practice with attention to footwork and the technical side of things, they should easily be a force to be reckoned with.”

Apart from the B-Boy events, Roxrite and Lilou made great memories travelling the country. From visits to local markets to shark diving, they were up for it! The whole tour was a great experience not only for the local youths but also for the famous All Stars!

Roxrite said, “I have been enjoying all the cities. It’s cool to hang out with the locals. It’s somewhat of a Hip Hop exchange and it’s humbling and inspiring to see how much they appreciate us being here as they don’t get too many opportunities like this. Experiences like this are another reason we love the dance.”

TURN IT LOOSE: A WORLD PREMIERE

To celebrate the world-wide release of the film Turn It Loose, the world’s greatest Hip Hop dancers were reunited in Paris yesterday. Amongst them were the protagonists: Lilou, Ronnie, Roxrite, Hong 10, Taisuke and Ben-J.

Workshops of a high level were held throughout the whole afternoon and thirty young B-Boys had the opportunity to discover new moves and learn from the champions’ talents. The Frenchman Lilou started off the first workshop under the blazing sun at 2 pm. B-Boys from near and far listened carefully to his advice as he taught them steps and gave them tips in front of an impressed public and journalists from all around the world. The youngsters caught on quickly and worked on their footwork, freezes and powermoves, loving the performance and the challenge. After four hours of learning about technique and style from these Hip Hop champions, their enthusiasm was evidential. “It’s such a sensational experience!” smiled Dylan, an eighteen-year-old dancer who came from Le Mans especially for the workshops. “These B-Boys have always been an inspiration to me,” he adds, “they are real champions, they are to B-Boying what Zidane is to football! I have been studying their styles for years, and now they are explaining it to us personally!”

The B-Boys enjoyed the experience too. To them, sharing is fundamental: “We have to pass down the flame. B-Boying is a dance in constant evolution. The guys taking part in these workshops already have a good level, in a few years they will be taking our place.” explains the Korean Hong 10.

Roxrite decided to go through the basics with his “students.” “I don’t want to teach them any choreography in particular; I want to talk about approach, concentration, and the basics. These things allow the dancers to connect with themselves, with their movements. The aim is not for them to dance like me, but to dance like themselves, to find their own style!” Alastair Siddons, director of the film Turn It Loose, was amused by the workshops: “Roxrite’s attitude sums up what I wished to show in my movie about technique. The film takes place inside the B-Boys: the silence of the body, the extreme concentration, the stamina.”

Somewhere between dance movie and documentary, Turn It Loose captures the B-Boys’ performances but also tells a story: six B-Boys from Africa, America or Asia, all united at the Red Bull BC One, an international one-on-one B-Boy competition. “It’s not only a film about the B-Boys, it’s a film about the Boys,” explains the director. “They are not only dancers but people, concentrated and determined. These are things I tried to capture in my production by following them in their day-to-day life and watching their training.” From daily life to intense training, winning, losing and self-questioning, Turn It Loose reveals the essence of breaking: determination. “That’s what I noticed the most when I watched the film” explains the Japanese B-Boy Taisuke. “This film shows how we live, the conditions under which we grow and develop our art.”

As the sun set on the Seine, champions and amateurs made their last moves as the nearby cinema MK2 cinema opened its doors for the movie’s world premiere. After 97 minutes of emotion, the curtain fell to standing ovations in honor of the film-stars, some of which recently joined the Red Bull All Stars, a crew of the very best Red Bull BC One participants. On his way out, Lilou, who will be present during the film tour around France, confirmed the film’s meaning: “The main thing in this film is that things go beyond the battles. Breaking is not acrobatics or circus tricks. Behind the moves, behind the glory, there are lives and stories to tell. That’s the key message.” The 2010 Red Bull BC One edition will take place in Tokyo on November 27.

Q & A with Director Alastair Siddons

When you set out making the film, what did you want to communicate about the world of B-Boying?
First and foremost I wanted to communicate the struggle inherent in the life of a B-Boy. DJ Renegade from England could not stress this enough and he was spot on. It’s a tough way to make a living, and even tougher to keep going as a B-Boy, whether because of injury, money, parental approval, environment or whatever. What I liked was that B-Boys were in it primarily because they loved it, so highlighting that passion was very important. The discipline that it gave them, the focus, the opportunity to do something positive and avoid taking the wrong path in life is such a deeply important part of the culture that I wanted to reflect that. B-Boys put such emphasis on improving one self that ultimately I wanted to show that it is a very positive world for anyone to be part of.

What have you learned about B-Boying?

I would say that I learnt a lot and nothing at the same time. I knew a bit before I started, and I was actually intent on not getting too familiar with the more complicated, technical side of things, because I never wanted to take for granted what someone with no knowledge might not understand. So I still struggle with some of the jargon.
Having said that though, I have never stopped learning off the B-Boys I know. Not how to dance, but how to apply oneself. How to be true to oneself. It’s that side of it that really inspired me – the focus, the dedication, the originality, the drive. And that is basically how I would define a B-Boy – as some one who always wants to push themselves that little bit further. And of course as someone who can God damn dance.

Have you tried B-Boying?
Once or twice only. I actually used to enjoy dancing but had to stop completely when I started filming Turn it Loose. As how the hell can you dance when surrounded by some of the world’s best. Having said that – at Lilou’s wedding last year, I was literally pushed into the circle. Thankfully four seconds later, I was pushed out again – which might give you an indication of my dancing feet. When I was in Japan, Taisuke actually said to me, “I hope your film making is going to be better than your B-Boying”.

What’s the best way to film a B-Boy Battle?
I think the way Chrigi from Partizan films the Red Bull BC One is how it should be filmed. He is a master. A beautiful slow tracking wide on a dolly to capture the dance in its entirety is the most important shot of all. But for me – I love the reaction of the B-Boy who is not dancing, but who is waiting, either studying his opponent or battling him in his reaction. After all it is a battle, in this instance between two B-Boys and I think for the entire exchange, whether you are down or waiting to get down, I want to see you in the act and in the react. Capturing this allows you to tell the story of the battle. The story of the battle and the story of the dance. Is what it’s all about!

Has working on the movie changed your life?

Of course and in more ways than I know! I spent more than two years working on the film and I gave it all that I had. I learnt so much about my profession and about the world. I learnt things from the B-Boys too. They teach you to believe in your vision, your take on things, but also that you can create something out of nothing as long as you want to. It’s given me drive.

What do you think will surprise people most about the film?

Hopefully lots of things! I think the music is extraordinary. There is obviously dance music in there but there is a score by Dan Jones that captures a more serene, emotional atmosphere that continues to blow my mind. I think what might surprise people the most is how quiet certain parts of the film are. Watching Hong 10 and Ronnie train without music, spells out the pain in a way you don’t understand when you can’t hear the impact on the floor. The pressure they are putting on the bodies and what they are asking themselves to do, is frankly incredible. I hope people who know nothing about B-Boying will be nothing short of amazed at the sheer and complete artistry involved in the way of the B-Boy.
